By the time a choice becomes conscious, a great deal is already underway. Conditioning has moved, appetite has moved, fear has moved, memory has moved, the mood has tilted the field, and the body has already started leaning.
That is why I do not find the ordinary picture of free will convincing. The conscious self looks less like a sovereign cause and more like the place where causes become a story. People mistake authorship for awareness because the explanation arrives wearing their voice.
If free will survives that pressure, show me where it enters. If it does not, tell me what responsibility still means once the fantasy of a detached chooser falls apart.
