People will sacrifice accuracy, intimacy, growth, and sometimes entire years of life to protect a flattering internal image. That is not accidental. The image is doing regulatory work.
It protects coherence, pride, innocence, and the right not to answer for what one is. Confusion can feel easier to carry than a version of oneself that demands real revision.
Why do you think self-image is defended that hard, even after reality has started punishing it?
