Honesty is not always clean. Sometimes it carries truth. Sometimes it carries frustration or aggression in a form that sounds more defensible. The sentence may be accurate while the motive underneath remains mixed.
That is why "I am just being honest" proves very little on its own. I care less about whether the words sting and more about whether they clarify reality or mainly discharge tension.
